How to choose an AC for your room: size, type and budget
Most people start by comparing prices. Start with your room instead. A wrong-sized AC wastes money whether it is too small or too big.
Step 1: Match the tonnage to your room
This is a rough guide for a normal bedroom. Always check the maker's recommendation for the model you want.
| Room size | Usual tonnage |
|---|---|
| Up to about 120 sq ft | 1 ton |
| About 120 to 180 sq ft | 1.5 ton |
| About 180 to 250 sq ft | 2 ton |
Go one size up if the room is on the top floor, faces the afternoon sun, has big windows, is a kitchen or living room, or has many people in it.
Step 2: Decide between inverter and non-inverter
An inverter AC changes its compressor speed instead of switching on and off. It usually costs more to buy and less to run if you use it many hours a day. See inverter vs non-inverter AC.
Step 3: Check the energy label
More stars mean lower running cost. Compare stars only between ACs labelled in the same year, because the rating rules are revised from time to time. See how star ratings affect your bill.
Step 4: Look at build and service
- Condenser coil material: copper coils are common in better models and are generally considered more durable.
- Warranty on the compressor and on the whole unit.
- Whether the brand has a service centre in your city.
Step 5: Add the extra costs
Installation, a stand, extra copper pipe beyond the free length and a stabiliser (if your area has voltage swings) can add up. Ask for the full cost before you buy.
Quick checklist
- Measure the room.
- Pick the tonnage.
- Choose inverter or not, based on daily hours of use.
- Compare star ratings from the same year.
- Compare the total cost, not just the price tag.
Prices and models change often, so check the current price on the store before buying.
